Wow, what a ride. Stan Van Gundy did an amazing job taking his team to the championship last year. He started out with a strong fantasy draft, with the first move of his career drafting John Wall at 10th overall in our inaugural Fantasy Draft. It was all smooth sailing from there, as he added Rudy Gay, Al Horford, Roy Hibbert and more.
Some people may find it a little odd that Stan wasn’t a shoo-in for EotY, but he had a few hiccups along the way. A failed 3 way trade with Philadelphia and San Antonio was his first move, and unfortunately it had Detroit sending John Wall away, however the trade was shot down as San Antonio had no idea what was going on. His 2nd move was also highly contested, sending John Wall for Mike Conley + Trey Burke + Cody Zeller, we have no idea how this trade would have worked out, but I think Stan would be pretty happy now that he ended up keeping the Finals MVP on his roster.
However, his first accepted trade, and what may have been the best trade of the season. It even appeared like he may lose, but Horford didn’t work well next to Hibbert, and Pau was the ultimate piece in what became the best frontcourt in the finals (over the dreaded HO-NO). After that trade Detroit went from being barely over .500 to immediately beginning a dominating 13 game winning streak. Finally, Detroit pulled off what may have been the final nail in the coffin of the hopes and dreams of any other team to emerge from the east, a complete thrashing this trade cemented Stan Van Gundy’s team a guaranteed deep playoff run. Their interior defense and Pau’s ability to score anywhere from 2 allowed Detroit to sweep their way through the playoffs, not even losing a game until the ECF.
Congratulations Stan Van Gundy. You did a fantastic job in the draft, in trading, and in setting rotations. You built the only truly 12 deep team in the entire league, and were rewarded by lifting the Inaugural D720 Championship Trophy. You were an important member of the Trade Committee and a helpful piece for the Ratings Committee. I thank you for your service and look forward to all the future contributions you will bring to this league!
