How is Cleveland so good? Probably because both Giannis and Elfrid Payton have a perimeter defense attribute (questionable whether Payton has earned that one), both Giannis and Mozgov have Interior Defense attributes, and both of the other guys in the line up play solid defense and shoot threes well. If defense is treated as the most important attribute in the sim for winning games (it is) then Cleveland is naturally going to be very good.

Oladipo is the one who has vastly underperformed on defense, Payton is sooo good.

I haven't found any statistical evidence to back that up (DBPM, DRPM, DWin Shares all say he's very average at best) and the eye test hasn't given me much else. I know it's not exactly fair to talk about Russell Westbrook's production while you're guarding him as a gauge of good defense, but Russ has put up some gaudy numbers on Payton this year and Eric Bledsoe always holds Russ to pretty efficient nights even though you won't give him that same credit. I'm just not nearly as sold on Payton as you are I suppose.

He plays passing lanes really really well, he really gave Lin and Batum a hard time when they played charlotte. He is always getting deflections which is very very under rated. He is smart as a tack and is a coach on the court already at his incredibly young age often directing teammates on the defensive side of the ball. He is really good at reading plays too and who is gonna get open off different types of screens.
