1st Round Draft Picks are able to be "protected" during trading like in the real NBA, but simpler for logistical reasons.
A draft pick during a trade can be:

Regulations:
1. Teams cannot trade future picks not already in their possession. Picks are not assured until the draft lottery of that year.
2. If the team giving up the protected pick meets the requirements to keep their pick, their draft pick the next year will also offered to the other team, but be protected either increasingly, decreasingly, or not at all. The choice of conveyance type is up to the GMs in the trade.
Order: Top 3 <---> Top 8 <---> Lottery <---> Swap ---> No Conveyance

If the Lakers trade their 2016 Draft Pick as Top 8 protected with decreasing conveyance to Chicago, then they fail hard enough to keep their pick, their 2017 draft pick will then be offered to Chicago as Lottery Protected.

If the Lakers trade their 2016 Draft Pick as Lottery Protected with increasing conveyance to Chicago, then they fail hard enough to keep their own pick, their 2017 draft pick will then be offered to Chicago as Top 8 protected.
