Current Rating: 78 He is rated as the 7th best player in this league, but has proved this year that he is a true scorer to complement his play on the defensive end, cementing his position as one of the top 5 players in the NBA. Definitely think he deserves an increase of few points to accurately depict the improvement in play he has had this year to deserve a firm spot in the MVP discussion. Some stats: #3 in PER (27.5) behind Russell Westbrook (30.6) and Kevin Durant (27.6) #7 in total steals (132) #9 in defensive rating (101.6) #6 in offensive win shares #6 in defensive win shares

I just want to say that rating people based on MVP votes is really dumb.
I don't argue the fact that Kawhi doesn't deserve to be rated 78, or perhaps get a very tiny increase, but I think being in the "MVP discussions" shouldn't factor into anyone's judgement. I've been thinking about this for awhile and it's really important if we want to be rating people consistently.
MVP in the NBA is so often, the best player on the best team. Or the best player on one of the good teams. It excludes extremely relevant players in the discussion of who is the best player in the league (Anthony Davis, anyone?). While Kawhi may be 3rd or so in MVP voting, I think to extend that he is also the 3rd best player in the league is pushing it.
I'll also point out that overall rating oftentimes has nothing to do with who is the "best player in the league", and is rather just the points needed to make an accurate representation of the player. Because "Height" is the most heavily rated rating in this game, Kawhi will necessarily be a point or two lower than his taller counterparts. Kawhi shouldn't be rated as high as Durant, or AD, or LeBron for this reason. This is also why Curry maxed out at an 82, and so has Russell Westbrook.
