The Raptors accept this trade. A lot of factors go into this deal, here's a few of them:
We're now stocked with guys who in a year or two will be legit starters or rotation players (ordered from most to least likely: Parker, Brogdon, Maker, LeVert, CoJo, Markkanen, Jordan Bell, Rade Zagorac, Ron Baker, Sindarius Thornwell) That is a good young core to accompany a superstar, but none of those guys are likely superstars. Parker is a definite star potential player, and I think he'll be back strong, but can't carry a team. By the end of the year (likely with some exceptions) I see those guys' ratings going up drastically. However, this league takes a while to trust young players with high ratings, so next year my team will still be a bottom five team, between the Parker injury and waiting for those ratings to go up. And if playing the draft has taught me anything, it's that there's not a huge point in being the VERY worst team. So next year we still land a top-ish pick, and quite potentially top three. That gives us one great fluid asset to either draft another supporting player for this group, or flip the pick for a good vet that will help keep Boogie here. The bottom line is, our team will be on the upswing SOON, so I want to capitalize on the value of my picks now, before my team gets better. Even if things go badly for us after 2018, we lose DMC (which we think is unlikely, actually) we'll have all of those guys to sell high on and get more picks elsewhere.
However, we like our chances at keeping DMC around. We're ten deep in young guys with either high potential or solid role player potential. Maker can be a unicorn, a perfect fit next to Cousins in the frontcourt. LeVert has proven to be a good, athletic player on both ends of the court. Brogdon looks like a career started, with great defense and a consistent jump shot. And Parker was a 20 ppg scorer last year, who would do very well in this lineup. In terms of starting lineup, it's like we've already built the team around Demarcus. CoJo is a proven young NBA player. Add to that a high pick next year, and a slew of guys who are behind either bad or old players, or fill a huge position of need on their IRL teams (Markannen, Zagorac, Bell, Baker, Thornwell) and we clearly have a bright future. DMC wanted to stay with the hapless Kings IRL, I see no problem retaining him here.
Overall, Demarcus will be worth more to us than the picks we send. We get a star to lead our young, rife with potential squad, and we still have our first round picks in 2018 (because even with Boogie we'll be deep in the lottery), 2020, and 2021 or 2022. We like that deal. We like that deal a lot.
And, I think Milt gets a good deal here too. Two high value picks to start a rebuild, his team will be bottom five after the trade, and he gets a potential good starter in Rivers and a low-risk high reward asset in Matthews. Overall, I think it's a win-win.
