Looking over his finances early this week, OKC GM Steve Jobs noticed an odd hole in the team's books. A supposedly vacant head coaching job.
"I don't remember firing anyone, but I looked over the numbers and realized there doesn't seem to be a head coach... like... for a while! I thought it was Scotty or Billy or someone, but it turns out we've been letting our guys run around unchecked at practice and in games basically this entire time."
Asked for comment on if he thought the lack of a coach might have played into their lack of success, Jobs gave a nice icy glare and jabbed "Of f****** course it has."
Sources close to the situation say that Jobs has been desperately reaching out to great coaches around the league looking to fill the role with a top tier leader - with a particular eye on the Spurs Greg Popovich, who sources say isn't thrilled about Robinson taking over as GM and forcing him to be a tank commander.
"Look man, we're trying to get over the hump. Not having a coach is kind of a big deal. We think we've got the talent to make big waves this year, but it's gonna take having a coach to probably get it all put together!"
Pressed for further thoughts on his roster, Jobs said, "Unlike in years past, we believe we've accumulated the talent to contend without any need to fear how the long term future of the team will shake out. In years past, our best guys have been the John Walls and the Khris Middletons, where even though they were smack dab in the middle of their prime years, they were old enough and developed enough that if they weren't capable of pushing us over the top we probably weren't ever going to win one... no offense to them, we just couldn't put the talent around them to make it happen... it's led us to take pretty drastic measures leading up to the trade deadline where if we didn't think our team had a realistic shot in the playoffs we made plays for talent or assets and let some young guys carry the load in the playoff run. But things are different. Now we've got Ben going into his 2nd year, Murray and Brown going into their 3rd years, Turner into his 4th, and MPJ will hopefully get some run this year. The young guys are the real stars, and now we expect them to carry the load regardless. If our vets can't get us there, we still have a lot of room for growth and a lot of reason for optimism. There's really no chance we change direction dramatically this year. We're gonna grind it out with these guys and we'll be aiming for a deep playoff run no matter what. Huge respect to JT and his work with the Suns, but if Phoenix can get to the Finals without their MVP, we truly believe in our talent to get us there as well. This year, and maybe even next, should be the culmination of a lot of hard work for our guys and we expect to see those results reflected on the court."
"We just gotta find a d*** coach."
Thunder star Ben Simmons was reached for a quote and said, "Yeah, I didn't really think we needed a coach. I'm Ben Simmons."
