Cleveland Cavaliers vs Philadelphia 76ers Eastern Conference Finals Preview:
We have the top two seeds set to duel for a chance to advance to the NBA finals after seeing the 76ers advance from a grueling 7 game series against the defending champs, The New York Knicks. The Cavaliers have pretty much dominated the Eastern Conference, finishing with a 65-17 record. In most cases this would be good for the best record in the league, but Golden State were just a tad bit more consistent during the regular season. The Cavaliers have done it with an all around approach, Giannis has been an advanced stats God, and could be the first MVP/DPOY in D720 history, his efforts combined with Nikola’s Vucevic post game have given teams fit on the interior. If that wasn’t enough offense, sharp shooters Klay Thompson and Rudy Gay man the wing, while two way specialist Jrue Holiday, runs the show:
As for the Sixers, they might have the best shooting team in the NBA. James Harden, and Dame Lillard is a special backcourt. It’s hard not to imagine the beard receiving some MVP votes this year. The rest of the Sixers team fills out nicely with players like Mirotic, Larry Nance Jr, Gallinari, and veteran leadership in players like Vince Carter, and Javale McGee. They’re one of the more exciting offensive teams in the league!
The Road:
The Cavaliers finished the regular season with a 65-17 record, and thus far have swelt both of their playoff opponents in the Indiana Pacers, and a talented -
Atlanta Hawks team. The Sixers finished the regular season with 59 wins. This post season have come with some struggles, they advanced 4-1 in a highly competitive series with a young Brooklyn Nets team, before edging out a game 7 against the defending champion New York Knicks at home.
Keys to Victory:
For the Cavaliers to advance in this series, they simply need to play the same brand of basketball that saw them dominate the NBA. Physicality, and versatility on both ends of the floor will be key in this series. I expect the Cavs to throw a bevy of defenders at the duo of Dame and Harden, while offensively I think they will aim to exploit the Sixers lack of interior presence.
For the Sixers, they need to get physical, the Cavs come quipped with several high IQ/all team defenders. It won’t be easy to get into their set offense, and they should expect literally ever single shot and layup to be harshly contested. If there is an open shot to be made, the Sixers need to be efficient.
Prediction:
For me this series should play out a lot clearer than the Lakers/Warriors series. It’s just hard for me to imagine the Sixers surviving a grueling seven game series against the Knicks to advance and have to do it all over again against a superior team in the Cavs, who are well rested. I fully expect the Cavs physicality and versatility to frustrate the Sixers offensively, and I expect Vucevic and Giannis to get theirs in the paint at will. Even with all that being said, I have to respect James Harden whose been elite this year, and I have to respect Dame Lillard, whose an absolutely live-wire. I’m going 4-2 Cavs in a fairly tame series.
