DUDE, WHERE IS MY CAR?
by Jackie Kong
The following is a biased State of Business report of the Dallas Mavericks for the upcoming season and beyond presented as a combination of hopes, disappointments, broken and new dreams. But all present is preceded by a past so that's where we begin.
THE PAST
Before things there was a dumpster. That Dumpster was called the Dallas Mavericks and it took months before someone stood up to the challenge. That was Yeezy.
In his 1st year of horror, his best asset was Gary Payton (the 2nd) followed by a dead contract and every time he bumped his depth chart, people asked if he meant dump. Even worse, he finished last and without a 1st but we will get back to that later.
Yeezy's 2nd season was different. His team was horrible as usual and the jokes wouldn't cease but this time he had a secret weapon with only one bullet on its chamber. He owned his 1st. That season was long; Scalabrini finally mastered his tanking skills so having the best lottery odds was not an option but draft gods had their own plan. Before knowing, it was lottery time and bang! 1st Pick! Then, it was a question of Doncic or Ayton but with Mavs being Mavs and Luka being Luka the answer was crystal clear.
Season 3 was when things got serious. Clock started ticking the same way it did when Cavs selected Lebron so Yeezy had to do something. That's when he made his 2nd best decision to that point; He contacted the Kong. I was a freelancer and just set up a Kent Bazemore trade between Yeezy and Billy so helping him was a continuity of what Bazemore started. I actually stayed as a freelancer for the rest of the season but with time it became obvious that I felt comfortable being a Mav.
Clean house for when Luka becomes good; That was our premise and that's what we did one small trade at a time involving as many teams as needed. It was a really hard task and I actually went missing in 2 different periods in between but slowly we got to where we wanted. And then, Yeezy got lucky again. 2nd Bang! 2nd 1st! Luka got a Zion!
SEASON HOPES AND EXPECTATIONS
Current Season started 3-4 for the Mavs and after years of not being good enough it is beginning to feel like there might be a Playoffs spot waiting for Luka and company. What we expect is to be more competitive than last season and what we hope is to finally make the Playoffs.
About Luka, we expect him to become a top 10 player and we hope for him to be in the MVP race. Also, we have big hopes deposited in Kelly Oubre as a 3rd wheel to Luka and Zion and we expect great things from the rest of the young core that includes Walker, Paschall, Brown and others.
About Zion and going back to the original question about where the car is meaning Zion, we expect him to fully recover from his injury and we hope to see him dunk all his way to stardom soon. Maybe, we should be more worried about his long term longevity but when draft gods bless you with back to back 1st picks you don't look back. It is that simple for better or worse.
DISAPPOINTMENTS AND BROKEN DREAMS
Remember that 1st I mentioned that was Mavs' pick for another team in Yeezy's inaugural season? That pick was Josh Jackson and somehow he found his way back to Dallas the year after. Jackson looked promising until he got arrested for trying to break into the VIP area of a music festival. He was released soon after but he never recovered his mojo. Josh is still young so he can turn the page but he needs to try harder.
THE FUTURE
Future depends on one simple idea. Talent brings talent, superstars want to play with other superstars and Luka is already a superstar or about to become one. We don't expect everyone to agree but that is our plan and selling point. We are projected to have 2 max slots next off-season and we intend to use at least one of them.
And with that, We conclude this report. The Dickens' quote is sort of out context but I wanted to express how this whole process was like with someone else's better words. Hope you enjoyed it and thanks for reading!

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair."
