I'm not a secret keeper, so here's why I'm doing this trade.
Basically, the way I'm looking at it is the most important aspect of the future of my franchise is the intersection of when I have to start paying young guys and what I can do I'm FA.
Right now, I have an insane amount of money coming off the books for next off season. I want to keep that. I'll have to re-sign Lauri as an RFA, but that can happen after I do UFA. I can have enough space for over two max contract UFAs to come in. Currently, my rookie deal guys are SGA, Clarke, Lauri, MPJ. That's a very promising core--but even it's not over the top just yet. For that reason, I'm inclined to sell on vets now for a lottery pick that I like, and be a lottery team in a year that I own my own pick. Ideally, in the 22 season, my rotation can be big money FAs, Lauri on a new contract, and rookie contracts filling in the rest. As far as I can tell, that's a recipe for a legit title run.
So, I'm looking at this deal as for two lottery picks--the den pick, but also being back in the lottery in 21, before making my biggest moves yet. I have a window to break free agency next off-season, and I want to be as loaded with young talent rookie deals as possible before that.
On Wood, I like Wood, but 8/10 the young guy who comes out of no where on a bad team who looks like he might be a future star, is actually a very good role player. He's a valuable asset who I'll miss, but I'm gonna opt to sell him for what he's worth while his value might be at it's highest.
Capela is an absolute stud, but has flaws of his own, and besides that: I would have bird rights on him, but I'll also have bird rights on Smart and OPJ if they stay on the team. Very unlikely that I would be able to max two guys, pay Lauri, AND retain all three of the vets without being WAY over the luxury tax, which I want to put off for as long as possible. Not saying I'd choose either OPJ or Smart over Capela (I might though) bug right now it's more important to me to get another good rookie deal and let the rest fill in later.
By the way, OPJ and Smart are available for similar deals to this one. Would prefer to have another pick in the 14 - 20ish range, and the WAS 22 pick COULD be in play for the right deal.

So I think this trade could seem confusing for people considering I had the worst record in the league this season but the way I look at it is that Wood has a good chance of being a better player than the 14th pick.I like how Wood played even though it was a small sample.I agree that 2 years of Wood+BRs compared to a 4 year rookie contract+RFA is bad but I also get Capela in this deal and while his player type has been less valued recently I still feel like he can make an impact and thrive in Atlanta as a Pick and Roll partner for Trae and provide solid rim protection which is great for sim purposes. In addition to Wood and Capela i get Lou while dumping some 2 year dead money and also I get to dump that massive KCP contract. This trade gives me some cap space which i can leverage into getting assets for a team looking to clear cap.So while this trade might not make sense for my team I feel like subsequent trades and my plan will align with my team's direction pretty well
